Generous, full yet fresh with a seam of minerality from its sandy, granite provenance in the trellised Shiraz vineyards of Paarl.
Naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks, 50% of this blend then undergoes malolactic fermentation in 300 and 600L French oak barrels (10% new).
Dark and brooding, the nose shows blackberries, plum and cranberry fruit with white pepper and cinnamon spice. The palate is dense and layered with succulent dark berries and a fine peppery tannin that lingers on the finish.
Tasting Notes Ruby red in colour, this wine shows perfumed notes of red fruit, candied apples and undertones of oaky spice. The palate is soft, elegant and is accompanied by flavours of cassis and plums leading to a wine with a vibrancy and lingering finish. Winemaker's Notes All the grapes are hand-harvested, sorted and whole berries are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The different grape varieties were fermented separately with extended maceration on skins after fermentation. Only the best barrels were selected for this wine. VINTAGE CONDITIONS The 2023 vintage experienced warmer winter conditions, leading to uneven budding and flowering. A much needed 100mm of rainfall in December (2022) alleviated stress and encouraged vine vigour. January and February brought hot weather, but phenolic ripeness was successfully achieved. VINIFICATION 0 Handpicked grapes were destemmed, sorted, and fermented in open top concrete fermenters at 28 C. The skins were punched down by hand, every 2 hours during fermentation. The juice was drawn off the skins after 3 days. Malolactic fermentation and maturation took place for 20 months in 225L French oak barrels. TASTING NOTES Dense ruby with a slight purple edge.
